SUU track and field: Thunderbirds post impressive finishes at Cedar City meet

CEDAR CITY — The Southern Utah University track & field teams set high marks as the team hosted the SUU Coliseum Championships on Saturday.

“For our athletes to be able to experience competition at their own home has been something that they’ve just loved and have been waiting for,” Thunderbirds head coach Eric Houle said.

Men’s Recap

Dylan Gibson continued his impressive season with a 400m time of 46.62 seconds, taking the third all-time spot in the Thunderbird record books.

With a time of 21.03 seconds, Nelson Douglas finished at the top of the 200m, putting him fifth all-time in school history.

The relay team of Gibson, Douglas, Jaedyn Carpenter, and Nick Pembroke also secured third all-time in the 4x400m with a combined time of 3:09.94.

Cedar English dominated both the long jump and 100m, placing fifth all-time in the long jump with a 24’4.25″ and tying for first in the 100m with a time of 10.75 seconds.

In the 2000m steeplechase, Nethaneel (Ban) Taylor and Lanse Larsen secured first and second with times of 6:07.89 and 6:10.42 respectively. 

Women’s Recap

With a time of 24.14 seconds, Secret Mceuen finished in the top spot of the 200m, placing her in third all-time at SUU. Shante Myrie was close behind with a second-place finish and a time of 24.33 seconds.

In the 100m, Iana Michovani-Graham inserted herself into the fifth spot all-time with a time of 11.95 seconds and a second-place spot in the event.

Morgan Blackburn, Rebecca Hazelet, and Jay Hunt each took high marks in the discus, with Blackburn taking the top spot with a throw of 164’8.50″, Hazelet claiming second with a 148’4.75″, and Hunt in third with a 142’3.50″.

The ‘Birds also took the top three in the shot put, with Rachel Gough in front with a throw of 39’0″, Hunt in second with a 37’6.0″, and Blackburn taking fifth with a 37’5.50″.
