Cedar City Fire Department Battalion Chief Travis Douglas said that at 5:39 p.m., crews were dispatched to a report of an active wildfire at 2176 W. 6600 North.

“As far as Cedar City Fire resources, we had one engine, four brush trucks and a water tender that responded to the call,” Douglas said, adding that those crews were joined by additional firefighters and resources from Utah Forestry, Fire and State Lands.

Firefighters were able to largely contain the fire to the vacant sagebrush-covered field where it had originated. Although the flames did briefly spread at one point across a dirt road and into a corral behind a residence, no structures were damaged.

Additionally, no injuries were reported, Douglas added.

“There were some power poles and power lines impacted by the fire,” he said. “Rocky Mountain Power had resources on scene replacing damaged poles when we left the scene yesterday. The power was out to a portion of the area for a short time, but the power was restored, I believe, by the time we left.”

Douglas said crews stayed on scene until approximately 8:30 p.m.

“We had a lot of resources there to get it extinguished and mopped up,” he said.

Officials said the cause of the fire, named the 6600 North Fire, is still under investigation.

“State Forestry and Fire has an investigator assigned to it,” Douglas said. “They haven’t determined the exact cause yet.”

This report is based on preliminary information provided by fire officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
