Abel Ocampo, 23, from Denver, Colorado, was camping at the state park with friends and family. Just after 4 p.m., Ocampo was driving a rented side-by-side all-terrain vehicle in dunes when he lost control and rolled the ATV, according to a news release issued by the Utah Division of State Parks.

Those nearby promptly called for help and attempted to extract Ocampo from the overturned vehicle. First responders from the Utah Division of State Parks, Kane County Sheriff’s Office, and Kane County Ambulance arrived shortly after and attempted lifesaving measures.

“Unfortunately, Ocampo was pronounced dead at the scene,” the release states.

There was another passenger in the vehicle who sustained minor injuries. A witness who assisted in lifting the machine sustained leg injuries and was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Ocampo was not wearing a helmet or a seat belt at the time of the crash. This incident remains under investigation, according to the release.

“The Utah Division of State Parks would like to extend our condolences to Abel Ocampo’s family and friends,” said Parks Public Information Officer Devan Chavez. “We would also like to thank the agencies and individuals who swiftly responded to the incident.”
