Orwin Henry Gubler

March 23, 1924-March 1, 2023

Farmers love rain. On a rainy morning, March 1, 2023, Orwin Henry Gubler quietly graduated from this life with high honors at his home on his farm surrounded by his loving wife and children at the age of 98.

Orwin was born on March 23, 1924, at his home in Santa Clara, Utah, to Archie Henry and Marie Blake Gubler. He was the second of six children. His early years growing up in Santa Clara gave him many fond memories, which he cherished throughout his life.

He learned how to work hard at an early age on the farm and ranch alongside his father and brothers. He also peddled fruits and vegetables along Highway 89. After high school, World War II changed his life. He joined the Navy and became a carpenter’s mate, earning the rank of third class. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor and repaired landing craft.

When Orwin returned home from the war, he was introduced to Velda Leany by her friend. When he danced with Velda, the Spirit said, “You need to get to know this young lady.”  Which he did. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the California Mission. After his mission, Orwin and Velda were married in the St. George Temple on Jan. 20, 1949.  They have enjoyed 74 precious years of marriage. Velda is the love of his life.  He lived for her, served her and adored her. They were blessed with six children who know they have the best parents ever.

Orwin and Velda’s honeymoon was postponed because of road closures from a major snowstorm. Two days after they were married, he had the opportunity to purchase a parcel of farmland, which he added to over the years. Besides his farm, he had land near Panguitch for summer grazing. He, along with his brother and the Freis, had a ranch at Parashant, which bordered the Grand Canyon. Because he was a hard worker and managed his time wisely, he became a successful farmer and rancher for 70-plus years.

For 49 years, Orwin served on the Washington County Farm Bureau Board. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving faithfully in many positions.

Orwin is known for his quiet manner, patience, honesty, integrity, kindness, sense of humor, positive attitude and love. He has a strong commitment to the gospel and his family. He taught by example.

He is survived by his loving wife Velda, his children Scott Gubler (Cheri), Brenda Haight, Blaine Gubler (Robin), Mark Gubler (Karen) and Gina Hall (Brent), 19 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Sheree Gubler.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Galen Gubler, five siblings Anna Smith (Eldred), Lester Gubler (Mary), DeLoy Gubler (LaDawn), Dale Gubler, Clark Gubler (DeAnn), Sson-in-law Robin Haight, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Orwin Gubler’s family gives great thanks to the wonderful people who helped care for him during the last few years of physical limitations.  He had a great team helping him make it to the finish line.
