DSU School of Humanities hosts BYU law professor; Barnum Honors Lecture

ST. GEORGE – Dixie State University’s School of Humanities will host the fifth Barnum Honors Lecture of the 2013-14 academic year on Friday, featuring BYU law professor John W. Welch, with his presentation “The Parable of the Good Samaritan: Ancient Cultures and Modern Messages.” The lecture will be held at noon in the Dunford Auditorium of the Browning Learning Resource Center on the DSU campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

Welch is the Robert K. Thomas professor of law at BYU and editor in chief of BYU Studies. He practiced law in Los Angeles with O’Melveny & Myers, during which time he established the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies. From 1988 to 1991, he served as one of the editors for Macmillian’s Encyclopedia of Mormonism, and has served as the general editor of the collected works of Hugh Nibley. Welch organized the bicentennial conference for Joseph Smith at the Library of Congress, and has served on the executive committee of the biblical law section of the Society of Biblical Literature.

In addition to his lecture, Welch will visit with DSU students interested in applying to law school in the Udvar-Hazy Business Building, Room 224, at 1:30 p.m. He will answer questions and provide advice to students about the application process.
