At least three St. George Fire Department engines were on hand in an open area of the property of Western Rock Products on the 1800 block of E. Commerce Drive and fire officials said they made quick work of containing the fire.

“We controlled it quickly,” St. George Fire Deputy Chief Brad Esplin told St. George News, adding that merely spraying water wasn’t going to do the job. “We used a special kind of foam on this kind of fire.”

Esplin said no other structures were threatened and there were no known injuries. There was no evidence of the fire itself from Commerce Drive other than a fire engine parked out front.

The fire was first reported around 8:30 a.m., and firefighters were mopping up by 9 a.m.

The asphalt truck, which appeared to be a total loss, was about 2,000 feet from the main structure of Western Rock Products and Commerce Drive, though there was material-making machinery about 150 feet away.

According to their website, the Commerce Drive Western Rock Products location specializes in creating decorative rock, ready-mix concrete and asphalt.
