ST. GEORGE — The Washington County Historical Society is sponsoring a guided tour of the town of Virgin on Saturday. The tour is open to the public and will begin at 10 a.m. in the town square.

Participants who wish to carpool from St. George should meet at the BLM offices, 345 E. Riverside Dr., at 9 a.m. Local historian Lenny Brinkerhoff will lead a walking tour of points of interest in the town.

Located about 20 west of Zion National Park, Virgin is on State Route 9 close to the Virgin River, from which the town took its name. The town’s first European settlers were pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who arrived in 1857.

Saturday’s tour is free of charge and is part of an on-going series of outings sponsored by the Historical Society that are designed to explore the rich history of Southern Utah. More information about the history of Washington County, along with details of future events, may be found on the Washington County Historical Society’s website.
