ST. GEORGE — The RFM Cinema Conference the second section to the Red Rock Film Festival came to a close November 14 with Chris White’s musical “Electric Jesus”. But before the film goes into distribution, it is making a comeback with Red Rock’s Virtual Festival in November. Other films are coming back as well for November, December and some are to continue as far as mid-January.
Some films such as Lauren Fash’s thriller “Through the Glass Darkly” are also slated to be available virtually until the end of the year through Red Rock’s portal; but current negotiations may make it disappear if contracts are signed. So it’s best to watch the features soon! The film scored high among the live audience and stars Robin Lively of “Twin Peaks” whose daughter goes missing. With the aid of a journalist played by Shanola Hampton of “Shameless” the two attempt to find out what happened. Lauren is one of several repeat filmmakers at the festival whose other film “Quiet” played at Red Rock in 2012 and stars Susan Graham who also has a part in “Glass Darkly”.
Another repeat filmmaker is Arjan Brentjes whose animated film “Sand” played in 2017 and is back with “Sad Beauty” a pandemic animated film that takes place in a heavily polluted world which actually began production last year. The film goes virtual until the end of the year.
On this year’s Covid pandemic Niels Mueller director of “Small Town Wisconsin” seemed impressed that Red Rock was about to go live and said,
“We had a great experience at Red Rock. Kudos to Matt and the Red Rock team for pulling off safe in-person screenings in this year of pandemic alongside a great virtual experience!”
Another short favorite was Oriol Puig’s music video for Dermot Kennedy’s new song “Giants” which used 3D animation with shots of Dermot shot greenscreen from his home during Covid.
The film will be available until mid-January as well as Jaremey McMullin’s “Silkies” about the work of Irreverent Warriors, who organize dozens of Silkies Hikes each year across the United States who wear only their military-issue ‘silkies’ boxer briefs to mourn the 22 veterans who kill themselves on average each day.
There are a couple of films that are still available in person: the Virtual Reality films from the Festival such as Mari Jaye Blanchard’s “Swing” are being presented in November and December at LaserMania on 67 E Saint George Blvd Ste 10, in Saint George.
