Nominees announced for 5th District Court vacancy

ST. GEORGE — The Fifth District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for a vacancy on the Fifth District Court. This position was created by the Legislature during the 2020 Legislative Session to reallocate resources within the courts and is a result of the retirement of Judge Julie Lund in the Third District Juvenile Court, July 16, 2020. The 5th Judicial District includes Beaver, Iron and Washington counties.

The nominees for the vacancy are: Ann Marie McIff Allen, general counsel, Southern Utah University, deputy county attorney, Garfield County; Jack Burns, attorney, Burns Law Office, PC; Eric Gentry, deputy county attorney, Washington County Attorney’s Office, prosecutor, City of Santa Clara and City of Enterprise; Rachelle Shumway, deputy county attorney, Washington County Attorney’s Office; Jay Winward, attorney, United States Attorney’s Office.

Written comments can be submitted to the 5th District Judicial Nominating Commission Chair Cindy Bulloch at judicialvacancies@utah.gov or Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, P.O. Box 142330, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-2330.

The deadline for written comments is noon July 10, 2020. The Nominating Commission may request further information or conduct an investigation of the nominees after reviewing public comments. After the public comment period, the names will be sent to Gov. Gary R. Herbert, who will have 30 days to make an appointment. Gov. Herbert’s appointee is subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate.
