CEDAR CITY — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The eighth annual Power in Pink – Iron County Walk and Run will take place on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at West Canyon Park, 151 S. 400 East in Cedar City.
An exciting and important development for the 2020 event is the opportunity to receive genetic counseling and testing for those interested in exploring familial cancer risks. Representatives from Myriad Women’s Health will be on hand for consultation, and Women’s Health and Midwifery will perform the testing. Myriad Women’s Health screens for 35 different cancer mutations. Those interested in this screening should bring their insurance card.
“As someone who is one of five daughters who tested positive for one of the breast and ovarian cancer mutations, BRCA1, finding out we had the broken gene in our family is already saving lives. Know your family history. Be proactive. Knowledge is power,” said Cynthia Kimball Davis, a breast cancer survivor and Power in Pink Iron County board member. “I will forever encourage anyone with a strong family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer to test for it. Put your mind at ease. And if you end up being positive like me, the great news is you can do something about it.”
“Breast cancer awareness is serious, but we like to have lots of fun while spreading the word,” said Robyn Brown, one of the founders of Power in Pink – Iron County.
Cedar City Mayor Maile Wilson-Edwards will be the emcee for the morning event. SHE Salon & Formal Dress Boutique is providing prizes for the best pinked-out participant, the best pink posse and awesome pink spirit. A traveling trophy will be awarded to the Southern Utah University department with the most participants. Drawings for a number of prizes will also be available. Physical distancing protocols will be followed during the event, and masks and T-shirts will be provided to each participant.
Started in 2013 by four young breast cancer survivors, this annual event helps meet the needs of the local breast cancer community. Sponsors for this year’s event include Ernie’s Stores, SHE Salon & Formal Dress Boutique, SUU Alumni & Community Relations, the Iron County School District, State Bank of Southern Utah, Smith’s, Women’s Health and Midwifery, Myriad Genetics, DMK Entertainment and Kolob Sign & Design.
