ST. GEORGE — A 21-year-old Hurricane man who called 911 reporting an assault was later arrested after officers learned he reportedly pointed a gun at two women, assaulting one at an apartment complex in St. George, according to police.

The arrest stems from an incident reported late Tuesday night when officers responded to an apartment complex on South 1000 East in St. George on a possible assault, according to arrest documents filed with the court.

Officers arrived and spoke to Reese Lynn Kealohapauole Kane, the reporting party, who said when he arrived at the apartment complex he was confronted by three individuals asking him why he had pointed a gun at two women in one of the units.

Kane stated “he didn’t know what they were talking about and that he had never pointed a gun at anyone,” the officer wrote in the report.

Following the short exchange, Kane reportedly said that all three men assaulted him.

Officers spoke to the alleged assailants who said they confronted Kane and told him to leave the property after receiving two separate reports alleging the suspect had pointed a firearm at two of the tenants — an account authorities say was corroborated by two others.

Officers learned that prior to the 911 call, Kane had been “playing” with a black handgun when it jammed. When Kane was confronted about being careless by waving the gun around, the witness said they told the suspect they were afraid he would accidentally shoot someone.

That was when the suspect pointed the gun at them and then continued waving it around the room.

The second witness told police the suspect became upset when he couldn’t find his medication. While trying to help him, Kane reportedly “pulled out a gun, racked it” and then put it to the complainant’s head.

A few hours later the suspect became upset again over a lost cell phone, which is when he reportedly assaulted the victim and then left the complex.

During the call, officers learned that Kane had thrown a rock through one of the tenant’s car windows, which the report stated was evidenced by the shattered glass and other debris found in and around the vehicle.

The suspect denied throwing the rock or pointing a gun at anyone when confronted by police. After a background check indicated Kane had four active warrants on prior cases, including vehicle burglary and criminal mischief offenses, he was taken into custody by police.

During a search of the suspect, officers reportedly found identification and financial cards that did not belong to Kane. He was then transported to jail early Wednesday morning facing multiple charges related to the incident, including five third-degree felony charges — three counts of aggravated assault and two counts of unlawful acquisition/possession of a financial card.

He also faces two counts of possession of another’s identification and one count each of property damage and unlawful use of a financial card, as well as the charges pending from the previous warrants.

A public safety assessment found in court records was flagged for violence, and Kane was formally charged when the case was filed Wednesday. The suspect is scheduled to make an initial appearance in 5th District Court on Monday.

This report is based on statements from court records, police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
