Huge American flag complements Snow Canyon State Park cliffs, but only for a limited time

ST. GEORGE — Snow Canyon State Park’s deep red cliffs showcase patriotic vibes this week. A gigantic American flag is flying high above the canyon until Saturday.

The nonprofit groups Follow the Flag and United We Pledge joined forces to bring the flag to Southern Utah. The flag measures 150 x 78 feet, totaling 11,700 square feet.

Organizers used drones to hang the flag, one of only two in the country that size. Carrie Fox of Follow The Flag told St. George News she and her husband began the program to inspire and heal people by hanging one of their large flags in canyons.

On Nov. 11 — Veterans Day — around 200 people braved the morning chill and enjoyed a program featuring guest speaker retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Jeff Burton.

A children’s choir from the Mountain View Montessori sang a patriotic medley of songs. The Gibson Sisters performed musical numbers and London Wade sang the national anthem. A military flyover was also presented.

Kyle Fox told the crowd the flag, named Lady Liberty, has traveled to canyons nationwide. Fox said his organization is a tribute to the flag bearers of old who would charge into battle carrying the American flag.

He said they were the light and direction for the rest of the team in battle, and someone else would pick up the flag if the flag bearer fell. Fox challenged the audience to pick up the banner of freedom and keep it going.
