Carmen Mary (Nieschulz) Sudweeks

St. George, Utah, resident Carmen Mary (Nieschulz) Sudweeks passed away on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023. She was born Dec. 20, 1941, in Bad Axe, Michigan, to Harry and Mary (Landry) Nieschulz. She married Weldon Sudweeks in the St. George Temple on Feb. 8, 1964.

Carmen was raised in Michigan until about fifth grade then moved to Arizona where, after high school, she went on to study at Northern Arizona University and receive her bachelor’s degree. She was active in many occupations throughout her life including Garfield County Extension Office, the quilting machine at Ben Franklin, clothing alterations and most of all homemaker and mother. The way she loved and served others was through her sewing, cooking skills and compassionate service. Her position on the Hospital Handcrafters Guild helped raise money and bring joy to many homes.

Carmen was a dedicated BSA Scouting leader helping many Cub Scouts gain life skills and learn about the good they can be in their community and world. She helped her three sons achieve their Eagle Scout rank as well as many grandsons. Over her lifetime Carmen was able to serve in many church positions wherever the Lord needed her. Carmen loved to travel. She and Weldon were able to visit all 50 United States and visit countries outside of the US. These travels include five missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her love for history spread over all genres of family history, church history, and world history.

She is survived by her husband Weldon Sudweeks of St. George, Utah; children Paul Sudweeks, Peter Sudweeks, Henry, and Lori (Crockett) Sudweeks, and Justin and Colleen (Sudweeks) Jepsen of St. George, Utah; stepchildren John and Christine (Sudweeks) Bell, Cheryl (Sudweeks) Mumford; 19 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Carmen is preceded in death by her parents and brother Nelson Nieschulz.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. at the LDS Chapel 166 S. Main St., St. George, Utah. Friends may call Saturday at 10 a.m. at the same location.  Interment will take place at the St. George Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. George Handcrafters Guild or the Perpetual Education Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
