ST. GEORGE — Two semitractor-trailers became tangled on southbound Interstate 15 Thursday at approximately 6 a.m. PDT, causing one traffic lane to be closed in the Virgin River Gorge.

Beaver Dam Littlefield Assistant Fire Chief Andre Ojeda told St. George News the first semi entered the other truck’s lane when the trucks became entwined for about a quarter of a mile near mile marker 15.5. He added that one semi was carrying salt and the other was transporting beer

“The first semi was driving in the outside lane,” Ojeda said. “I guess in that turn, she got into the No.1 lane and sandwiched the other semi between that semi and the center divider.”

The gas tanks of both trucks ruptured. Ojeda said fuel spilled and caused officials to close one lane of southbound traffic on I-15.

The Beaver Dam Littlefield Fire District and the Arizona Department of Transportation cleaned up the fuel spill. The Arizona Highway Patrol also responded to the incident. Both drivers refused medical treatment.

This report is based on preliminary statements from law enforcement and fire officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
