Trailblazer women’s basketball goes 2-0 in exhibition games in Greece

ST. GEORGE —  The Utah Tech women’s basketball team wrapped up its two-game Greek exhibition schedule with a perfect 2-0 record thanks to an 88-68 victory over the Athens All-Stars on Monday night in Athens.

The trip ran Aug. 10-16 and included two exhibition games and tours of the Kallimarmaro Olympic Stadium, which was the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, the Acropolis of Athens and its museum, and a boat excursion to the Greek islands of Hydra, Poros and Aegina.

According to Utah Tech media relations, freshman Kastyn Young led all scorers with 30 points on 12-of-20 shooting, including a 6-of-13 clip from the perimeter. The Trailblazer newcomer averaged 25.5 points in the two exhibition games, including a game-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting with five 3-pointers in last Saturday’s win over Greece’s Amilia Peristeriou Basketball Club.

Sophomore guard Amber Kartchner also enjoyed another solid outing as she poured in 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Kartchner also collected three assists and picked off two steals.

In addition, fifth-year guard Breaunna Gillen just missed a triple-double as she filled the stat sheet with 10 points, along with team-highs of 10 rebounds and six assists.

Utah Tech connected on 32-of-75 (.427) of its field goal attempts, which included a 16-of-51 effort (.314) effort from beyond the arc. The Blazers also tallied 30 rebounds, 11 assists and 10 steals.

Six Trailblazers scored in double figures as Utah Tech opened its Greek exhibition schedule with a dominant 119-45 victory over Greece’s Amilia Peristeriou Basketball Club on Saturday night in Athens.

Young led a potent Trailblazer offensive attack as she scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting with five 3-pointers in her first game in a Utah Tech uniform.

Kartchner flirted with a triple-double as she tallied 20 points with seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Meanwhile,  Gillen dished out a game-high nine dimes to go with 18 points and four steals.

Freshman Calyn Dallas chipped in 17 points, while fifth-year forward Emily Isaacson poured in 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting with three treys, and Catelyn Deaver tallied 12 points.

Utah Tech shot 55.5 percent (45-of-81) from the floor with 21 made 3-pointers (21-of-47; .447). The Trailblazers also collected 33 rebounds and 11 steals and recorded 18 assists on their 45 made field goals.

The Trailblazers were scheduled to return to St. George on Wednesday.
