ST. GEORGE — A motorcycle crash at the corner of Pioneer and Man O War roads in Bloomington just before noon Wednesday sent a woman to the hospital and her boyfriend assessing damage to his new Harley-Davidson.
The crash occurred around 11:50 a.m. as the motorcycle was heading south on Pioneer Road and the driver said he was swerving to avoid a blue Hyundai Elantra that had been making a left turn from Man O War Road to Pioneer. The Harley fell onto the road.
“It was just stopped in the middle of the road,” the motorcycle driver, who refused to give his name, said. “I tried to hold on to my girlfriend.”
The woman, who sustained a head injury and a road rash was taken to St. George Regional Hospital from the scene but officers said the injuries weren’t life-threatening. It also helped that an off-duty EMT happened to be driving by and provided immediate attention to the woman.
“It was very helpful,” St. George Poloce Lt. David Williams said at the scene. “We’re always appreciative of people with that skillset who are willing to help us out.”
The driver of the motorcycle had some bruises. There was damage to the Harley, which could be seen with a bent left handlebar and dislodged mirror.
“I just got it two weeks ago,” the driver said.
Williams, piecing together the crash, said a white SUV in front of the Harley was making a right turn onto Man O War and may have blocked the view of the Elantra turning onto Pioneer.
“They did not see the motorcycle behind it and began to make that left-hand turn,” Williams said. “The motorcycle rider lays on the brakes and lays down the motorcycle.”
Williams said citations are still to be determined but it will likely involve a failure to yield.
Northbound Pioneer Road was blocked and traffic was diverted to Man O War until the scene was cleared at 12:30 p.m.
