ST. GEORGE — An individual suspected of trying to use counterfeit currency at a store in St. George led police from multiple agencies on a high-speed car chase along state Route 7 Wednesday afternoon.
“The driver is a suspect in a counterfeit incident,” St. George police officer Tiffany Mitchell told St. George News in a text.
“We won’t get into a pursuit for a property crime,” Mitchell wrote. “We have a license plate number which is a rental and a photo of the suspect. Follow-up will be done.”
The chase began approximately at 12:52 p.m.
Washington County Sheriff personnel got involved when the suspect turned off I-15 and headed east on SR7, driving erratically and at a high rate of speed.
“This stemmed from a St. George call initially, so they’ll do the primary investigation,” WCSO sergeant Lucas Alfred told St. George News by phone.
“We got an attempt to locate a vehicle call for a gray, newer model Nissan Sentra,” Alfred said. “It fled from St. George police, last seen going east on SR 7. We had a deputy nearby who attempted to locate it and then pursued it to State Street (in Hurricane).”
Despite efforts to stop the vehicle or force it to pull over, including spike strips deployed near mile maker 22, the driver of the vehicle managed to elude officers.
“We pursued it to State Street to about 2000 West before terminating that chase due to traffic issues and concern about public safety,” Alfred said.
Alfred said the Utah Highway Patrol continued to seek out the drive and vehicle, but as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, the suspect was still at large.
