Shortly before 4 p.m., a Toyota 4Runner was traveling south on Cottonwood Springs Road in the left lane to maintain distance from a drop-off on the right side of the roadway, “which would have put her into oncoming traffic,” Washington County Sheriff Sgt. Lucas Alfred told St. George News.

At the same time, an ATV was reportedly navigating a blind corner from the opposite direction. The SUV swerved to the left, hitting an embankment. The 4Runner tipped over, hitting the ATV before regaining its wheels on the road, Alfred said.

A male passenger in the SUV was ejected due to the impact. The man was airlifted from the scene via an Intermountain Life Flight helicopter and the extent of his injuries was unknown, Alfred said.

Both of the ATV’s occupants were strapped in with 5-point harnesses and sustained minimal injuries, with minimal damage to the vehicle, Alfred said.

While the cause of the collision is currently under investigation, Washington County Sheriff Deputy Graham Hancock said one of the drivers may have been under the influence.

The SUV’s driver was arrested, but no other information is currently available, Alfred added.

The Diamond Valley Fire Department and U.S. Forest Service Ranger Kevin Heart also responded to the crash.

This is a developing story.
