The incident, which was reported shortly after 7:30 p.m., involved a silver Dodge Grand Caravan and a silver Chevrolet Cobalt passenger car.

Cedar City Police Sgt. Zac Adams said the driver of the minivan was heading northbound on Main Street when the vehicle struck the rear driver’s side of the westbound Cobalt as its driver was attempting to go through the intersection.

“It’s still preliminary, but it sounds at this point like the van failed to yield the right of way, which caused the accident,” Adams said.

“The party at fault will be cited,” Adams told Cedar City News at the scene, noting that preliminary evidence appears to point to the van driver running a red light.

A Gold Cross Ambulance crew responded but nobody was taken to the hospital, and no injuries were reported, he added.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and needed to be towed from the scene.

Adams said it appears that all occupants had been wearing their seat belts. The collision caused multiple airbags to be deployed in both vehicles.

Traffic along Main Street was impacted for approximately 25 minutes, with southbound vehicles being directed to take a one-block detour around the scene of the crash while it was being investigated and cleared.

Cedar City Fire Department personnel also responded, as did an Iron County Sheriff’s deputy.

This report is based on information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
