Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Matt Noyes said authorities responded to the scene near Virgin on State Route 9 after a call to 911 at approximately 10:09 a.m.

According to witnesses, a middle-aged man riding a street-style motorcycle was facing east on the south shoulder and either attempted a left turn or tried to perform a U-turn.

Whichever turn he was attempting, the driver of the motorcycle allegedly rode into the path of a grey Honda Civic.

The first officer on the scene was from the La Verkin Police Department.

A tourniquet was applied to the injured leg of the motorcyclist by emergency responders and the man was treated for cuts and abrasions.

“He sustained injuries to his left leg that are pretty significant,” Noyes said.

After the patient was stabilized, he was transported by ambulance to the St. George Regional Hospital, the patrolman stated. No injuries were reported from the driver of the Civic and traffic was only “closed briefly.”

Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies helped to direct heavy traffic at the scene, which was cleared by 11:30 a.m.

Noyes said the investigation is open and results will be turned over to the county attorney for consideration of possible charges.

“With the warm weather, make sure you keep an eye out for each other,” Noyes said. “Drive defensively. Going to be a lot of more travelers on the road.”

La Verkin Police Department, Utah Highway Patrol and Hurricane Fire and Rescue also provided assistance.

This report is based on statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
