ST. GEORGE — A passing motorist who happened to be a cardiac doctor stabilized a 26-year-old woman at the scene of a three-vehicle collision near Kanab on Tuesday morning, a Utah Highway Patrol spokesman said.

“After the crash, the female had a medical issue and luckily, there was a doctor that was able to assist them immediately,” UHP Public Information Officer Sgt. Cameron Roden told St. George News.

He said at 9 a.m., the highway patrol near Kanab escorted a wide-load vehicle transporting a dump bed. Two eastbound vehicles on Highway 89 near mile marker 3 were approaching the wide-load vehicle. Roden said vehicle No. 1, a blue Nissan Altima with two passengers, was traveling behind a white Toyota RAV4 with five occupants.

Roden said the driver of the Altima may have been distracted by the wide load and didn’t observe that the RAV4 had slowed down and pulled over.

“So after the wide load vehicle passed, both passenger vehicles and the Altima continued eastbound into the back of vehicle No. 2,” Roden said.

The 26-year-old female was transported via helicopter to St. George Regional Hospital. No other injuries were reported.

This report is based on preliminary statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
