St. George Police Officer Ean Williams told St. George News that officials were able to respond to the scene in a matter of minutes.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:20 a.m. when the man driving the Dodge southbound on Red Cliffs Drive failed to yield to oncoming traffic as he attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Mall Drive, Williams said.

Simultaneously, the woman driver of the Lincoln was traveling north on Red Cliffs Drive and was passing straight through the intersection on a yellow light.

As both vehicles proceeded in their line of travel, they crashed into each other causing extensive damage to both vehicles and the airbags in the Lincoln to deploy, Williams said.

Everyone in the vehicles was wearing seatbelts, and the driver and passenger of the Lincoln were reportedly transported to St. George Regional Hospital with unknown injuries.

The aftermath of the collision caused nearly an hour of disrupted traffic at the busy intersection.

As previously reported by St. George News, St. George Police Sgt. Cameron McCullough said this type of vehicle collision has become a regular occurrence.

Williams added that depending on the situation, it could be safer to wait until the light turns red before finishing a turn through traffic.

“Anytime you’re turning left in front of oncoming traffic, the owner of the responsibility is on the driver turning left, to make sure they do it safely,” Williams said.

The only citation issued was to the driver of the Dodge for failure to yield.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene and traffic returned to normal at approximately 12:10 p.m.

This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
