CEDAR CITY — One driver was cited for failure to yield following a two-vehicle collision at 200 North and Main Street in Cedar City on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident, which happened shortly before 4 p.m., involved a red Dodge minivan and a red Hyundai Elantra passenger car.

Cedar City Police Sgt. Dustin Orton said the two vehicles had been heading in opposite directions on 200 North, with the Hyundai driver about to make a left turn after the light had turned yellow.

Just then, the van entered the intersection, Orton said.

“It was a yellow light and they were rushing to make it through,” he said.

The front-end collision left the two wrecked vehicles positioned adjacent to each other, directly in the center of the busy intersection.

No injuries were reported. Two small children who had been riding in car seats inside the Hyundai were evaluated at the scene by medical personnel, but nobody was transported.

While the van sustained significant front-end damage and wasn’t drivable, the damage to the Hyundai was less severe. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

The man driving the van was cited for failure to yield, Orton said.

Orton said the incident serves as a reminder for drivers to not focus too much on the traffic light itself but rather on vehicles that may still be attempting to clear the intersection.

Traffic in the area was impacted for approximately 30 minutes while the scene was cleared. Southbound traffic on Main Street was detoured onto westbound 200 North due to the vehicles blocking the intersection.

In addition to multiple Cedar City Police officers, Gold Cross Ambulance personnel responded to the scene, as did a Utah Highway Patrol trooper.

This report is based on preliminary statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
