ST. GEORGE — A two-vehicle collision on Dixie Downs Drive on Tuesday afternoon left both vehicles with extensive damage and one woman driver with non-life-threatening injuries transported to the St. George Regional Hospital.
The crash occurred just before 3 p.m. at the turn-off onto 540 North from Dixie Downs Drive.
St George Police Sgt. Cameron McCullough said the adult woman driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic during a left turn and tried to “jump the gun” on incoming traffic. The driver of the gray sedan traveling north on Dixie Downs Drive hit the brakes and the vehicle collided with the white Honda Civic driven by the woman.
The driver of the gray sedan was an adult man who was not injured and only shaken up.
There was extensive damage to the gray sedan with moderate damage to the Civic on the passenger side. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
McCullough said the woman driver was cited for failure to yield, adding that this type of vehicle collision is becoming a regular occurrence but can be avoided by drivers being patient.
The collision caused the gray sedan to spin sideways and stop facing perpendicular to the street, blocking the northbound lanes. The Civic ended up on 540 North and partially on Dixie Downs Drive after spinning 180 degrees. Pieces of the vehicles came to rest on the sidewalks and up the Halfway Wash Trail, which leads to Royal Oaks Park.
The southbound lanes were open for traffic with one lane coned for northbound traffic.
Four police units, one St. George Fire Department unit and two Gold Cross Ambulances responded.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Zion Motors and SG3 Towing and Recovery. The scene was cleared and opened to regular traffic travel at about 3:50 p.m.
This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
