The driver, Benjamin C. Steed, had outstanding Arizona warrants that included child custody interference, aggravated assault on an officer and resisting arrest.

At approximately 3 p.m. on Friday, the Colorado City Police Department was able to identify Steed and initiate a traffic stop at 160 N. Central Street in Colorado City, said Lt. Mark Gower with the Colorado City Police Department.

During the stop, Steed allegedly barricaded himself in the vehicle but allowed the child that was with him to leave.

“The driver of the vehicle did the right thing and let the child leave the vehicle and go to a family member that was waiting,” Gower said.

From that point, negotiation ensued for Steed to leave the vehicle. The Washington County SWAT team was called for backup in case the incident escalated, Gower said.

After an hour of negotiation, Steed left the vehicle and was taken into custody without force.

Steed was then transported to the Mohave County Correctional Facility by the Mohave County Sheriff’s office.

“We appreciate all the agencies that responded to our location … we can not do our job without cooperation between these agencies,” Gower said.

This report is based on statements from court records, police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
