ST. GEORGE — An episode of distracted driving left an SUV on its side in Hurricane Monday afternoon.

Around 4:30 p.m., Hurricane City Police officers were alerted to a single-vehicle crash involving a white Ford Edge SUV in the area of 470 N. 1450 West.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they found the SUV sitting on the driver’s side, having veered off the road and down a small embankment where it came to rest in the yard of an unfinished home.

Hurricane Police Officer Dan Radditz told St. George News that the driver of the SUV, a 64-year-old woman, told responding officers she had been driving northbound on 1450 West when the contents of a drink she had in the car spilled over and distracted her. This ultimately led to her going off the road and resulted in the SUV on its side.

When the incident was reported, it was believed there were injuries, but the woman was unharmed and there appeared to be no property damage beyond what the SUV sustained in the incident, Radditz said.

Police at the scene chose not to cite the woman for the incident, Radditz said, though he added she most likely would have faced a citation if other vehicles or people had been involved in the crash.

“Distracted driving is more than just phones,” he said “People need to focus when they drive.”
