James Allen Nicks

Nov. 25, 1945-March 16, 2023

James Allen Nicks was born to Clarence E. and Dorothy Yasmer Nicks in Reno, Nevada, on November 25, 1945. The family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1954 where Jim grew up.

Jim married Trudy Jeneen Barnhurst on Oct. 28, 1967. Together they had four wonderful children: Tracy Joanne, Kelly Diane, David Charles and Jeffrey Haden Nicks. Sadly, they were divorced in 1985.

Jim married Karen Sue Martineau Pederson on Oct. 1, 1988. They were sealed in the Denver Temple June 9, 1990.

Jim became a stepfather to Karen’s grown children: Donald Earl Goldsmith, Joy Lynn Goldsmith Stewart, Leon Doyle Goldsmith Jr. and Anna Katheleen Alexander. He was respectful, gentle and kind to them and they returned all of that with a deep love for him and claimed him as their own favorite dad.

During most of Jim’s life, he tried to succeed in sales. He also worked in several opportunities such as the shoe business, credit unions, some construction, and mortgage banking. When he moved to St. George in 1992, he discovered that his true talent lay in customer service when he began working at J & J Building Supply on the contractor’s desk. He later went to work for Lowe’s and enjoyed continuing to work with the contractors and the general public for another 17 years.

Jim was a volunteer fireman for Dammeron Valley, dedicated to scouting, an amazing photographer, a Ward Missionary for two years, served in many other callings for our church and was a lover of people.

Jim suffered with kidney stones and eventually kidney disease for most of his life and the complications that come along with it.  He also bravely battled two kinds of cancer – kidney and prostate cancer, but he never complained or revealed those things unless it was required of him.

Jim leaves behind his most precious blessings – his wife Karen, his children and stepchildren, 18 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, his brother Gary (Vicky), two sisters — Daryl Hewett and Mary Nicks, and several very special lifelong friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 23, at 11 a.m., with a viewing from 10-10:45 a.m., in the St. George Stake Center, 1285 North Bluff Street, St. George. Dedication of the grave will be at the St. George City Cemetery for those who desire to attend.

Following the burial, a meal for family and friends will be served by the Relief Society at the Stake Center.

Arrangements are under the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221. Visit the Metcalf Mortuary website for condolences, complete obituary and funeral listings.
