Region 10 boys soccer: Mustangs, Thunder, Flyers win season openers at home

ST. GEORGE — Region 10’s regular season of high school boys soccer officially got underway Tuesday evening with Crimson Cliffs, Desert Hills and Dixie all posting home victories. Following are recaps of each game:

Crimson Cliffs 4, Cedar 1

At Crimson Cliffs, the defending state champion Mustangs posted a 4-1 victory over the Cedar Reds.

Crimson led 2-1 at halftime, with Ryan Smith scoring the Mustangs’ first goal, assisted by David Heinze. Later, Hinckley Heaton scored off an assist by Connor Denney. Corbin DeMille scored for Cedar.

In the second half, Heaton added another goal on a free kick outside the 18-yard box. Later, Camden Squires added a goal to round out the scoring.

The Mustangs improved to 3-1 overall, 1-0 in Region 10 play, while Cedar dropped to 0-5 and 0-1.

Cedar next plays at Snow Canyon on Friday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m. Crimson has a bye that night.

Desert Hills 4, Snow Canyon 3 (OT)

Zach Davis scored the sudden-victory golden goal in overtime to give the Thunder a 4-3 home win over the Snow Canyon Warriors.

After the Thunder’s Dillon Bingham scored in the first half to give Desert Hills a 1-0 lead at halftime, the teams traded goals until it was 3-3, which forced overtime. Davis’ game-winner came about 7 minutes and 30 seconds into the first and only 10-minute overtime period.

Seven different players ended up scoring during the closely-matched contest, with Isaac Poppe and Karson Clark joining Bingham and Davis as the Thunder’s scorers and Will Warner, Brock Boyce and Luke Awercamp each netting a goal for the Warriors.

Desert Hills (2-1 overall, 1-0 in region play) next plays at Pine View at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while Snow Canyon (1-3, 0-1) hosts Cedar that same evening.

Dixie 6, Pine View 2

At Dixie, the Flyers and Panthers were tied 2-2 at halftime, but Dixie scored four unanswered goals in the second half to come away with the convincing win. Dixie’s Iker Meza scored a trio of goals for a hat trick while sophomore Melvin Contreras added two more goals for Dixie.

Dixie (now 1-2 overall, 1-0 in region) will be at home again on Friday when the Flyers host the Hurricane Tigers. Meanwhile, Pine View (2-1, 0-1) hosts Desert Hills on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
