Shortly before 11:30 a.m., officers and emergency personnel responded to a crash involving a white SUV that crashed through an exterior wall of a quilting shop located in the 2700 block of Santa Clara Drive in Santa Clara.

Santa Clara-Ivins Police Sgt. Reed Briggs told St. George News they arrived at the scene to find a large hold in one of the exterior walls on the side of the building, while the SUV sitting a few feet away. They also found debris scattered throughout the interior of the store.

One woman who was inside the shop at the time of the crash sustained minor injuries when she was struck in the head by a printer that “was knocked from a shelf running along that interior wall,” Briggs said, when the back of the SUV crashed through the wall.

She was treated by emergency medical personnel at the scene. Briggs also said the woman driving the SUV reported no injuries.

At the time of the crash, the driver told officers she had traveled to Santa Clara from her home in Mesquite, Nevada, to do some shopping, and as she was backing out of the parking lot of the quilt store, she said one of the slipper-type shoes she was wearing came off and became wedged near the accelerator.

This caused her foot to hit the gas instead of the brake pedal and launched the SUV backward into the building.

Immediately after the crash, the driver was able to pull the SUV forward and out of the building, Briggs said.

“Surprisingly,” Briggs said, “the Ford sustained minimal damage, other than a few scratches on the rear bumper and other minor damage.”

The building and the merchandise inside, however, sustained extensive damage, the amount of which is being determined by investigators and fire officials that remained at the scene for several hours. The business will remain closed until repairs can be completed.

The Santa Clara-Ivins Police Department and Santa Clara-Ivins Fire and Rescue responded and tended to the scene. Fire crews worked to clear debris and assist in the cleanup operation that continued into the afternoon. This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
