Interfaith Harmony Day is a local take on the United Nation’s sponsored World Interfaith Harmony Week, which started Feb. 1. It is a time meant to promote “dialogue among different faiths and religions to enhance mutual understanding, harmony and cooperation among people” and encourages “all states to spread the message of interfaith harmony and goodwill in the world’s churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and other places of worship.”

The St. George Interfaith Council’s Interfaith Day of Harmony event will be held at Kuny Hall at the St. George Catholic Church on Saturday on 7 p.m. and will feature six different faith-based musical groups. This will be followed by an opportunity to visit with the representative of 12 different area faiths and ask them questions about their practices and beliefs.

Each religion will share how they express “The Golden Rule,” the St. George Interfaith Council said in a press release about the event.

Musical groups to perform for the concert portion of the event include: The St. George Interfaith Choir, Good Shepherd of the Hills Choir, Saint George Catholic Church Bilingual Choir, Center for Spiritual Living, Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church Choir and keynotes from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Faiths traditions represented at the event include: Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, Catholic, Unitarian, Lutheran, Solomon’s Porch, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam and others

Food offerings will be collected and given to Our Mother’s Food Pantry at the Saint George Catholic Church.

“Come celebrate with the St George Interfaith Council and Choir the spirit of unity that we enjoy in our community,” the Interfaith Council said in a statement. “We will join with all the world religions, which at their core recognize that we are all in this together and that we need to love and support one another to live in harmony and peace.”

The United Nations started World Interfaith Harmony Week in 2010 and was originally proposed by King Abdullah II of Jordan as a way to promote harmony between people regardless of their faith.
