Region 10 girls basketball: Snow Canyon closes in on title; Dixie, Desert Hills also win

ST. GEORGE — The race for the Region 10 girls basketball title is turning into a one-horse show.

Snow Canyon won comfortably at home Thursday evening, remaining unbeaten in region play.

Elsewhere, Desert Hills just edged Crimson Cliffs in a one-point squeaker and Dixie also won on the road.

Following are recaps from Thursday night’s action around St. George:

Snow Canyon 71, Cedar 52

The Warriors erupted for 20 points in both the first and second quarters, taking a lead they would never let go at halftime, 40-25.

The home team upped its advantage to 65-35 going into the final session. The Warriors remain unbeaten in region play at 9-0.

Seven different Warriors scored at least two points in the victory. Olivia Hamlin once again led the way, posting a game-high 28 points.

Natalie Olson sank four 3-pointers and tallied 14 points in the win and Kelly Howard was the third Warrior to score double-digits with 10 points, including two 3-pointers.

Meanwhile Cedar got 14 points from Kiara Hansen and 11 from Ana Robison. Gabby Gomez canned two 3-pointers and contributed 10 points to the Reds in the setback.

Snow Canyon travels across town to face Dixie next Tuesday night, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. Cedar hosts Pine View at the same date and time.

Desert Hills 35, Crimson Cliffs 34

The Thunder held on to win in the Fieldhouse after scoring eight points in the final quarter of a low scoring contest.

Both teams played smothering defense and forced a lot of missed shots.

Coco Korella sank a 3-pointer and scored a bucket as the Mustangs took a 12-11 lead after the first quarter.

Defense was the name of the game as the teams combined to score just 11 points in the second quarter. Crimson Cliffs led 18-16 at the break.

Kaitlyn Andrus keyed a Desert Hills rally in the third quarter. She sank two 3-pointers in the frame, part of her game-high 11 total points. Andrus was the only double-digit scorer in the contest.

Summer Adams answered for Crimson, netting a 3-ball and a bucket to help the Mustangs nurse a 30-27 lead going into the final quarter.

Desert Hills won that final session 8-4 to secure the victory. Hannah Heaton made two free throws, Jacie Riding sank a shot and Ashtin Hansen scored four points to lead the Thunder’s final push.

The Mustangs did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter, shooting 4-for-5 from the free throw line to provide the final margin.

Kenadee Richey led Crimson Cliffs with eight points and Adams scored seven for the Mustangs. Seven other players scored at least two points in the setback.

Crimson Cliffs next plays at Hurricane, Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. Desert Hills has a bye that night.

Dixie 55, Pine View 49

The Flyers recovered from a 20-11 deficit after the first quarter, battling back to tie the game 30-30 at halftime in the Pit.

Dixie completed the six-point victory over the Panthers by winning the third quarter 12-9 and taking the fourth quarter 13-10.

Kealah Faumuina posted a game-high 19 points for Dixie, all coming from underneath the basket. Hali Smith was next for the Flyers with her 11 points and Jaycee Bundy sank three 3-pointers as part of her 10 point performance.

Pine View fought fiercely and the game was in doubt until the end. Reese Gustin scored 15 points including two 3-pointers to pace the Panthers. Ellie Norton was next for the home team with her 10 points including three 3-pointers.

Avery Gustin was the third Panther to score double-digits after she threw in 10 points.

Dixie hosts Snow Canyon in the Hangar for a pivotal Region 10 game on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, Pine View goes to Cedar for a game against the Reds at the same date and time.
