Bundle up! Wind chill, winter weather warnings cover 3 Southern Utah counties

ST. GEORGE — Monday’s winter weather brought snow and cold to Southern Utah, and now the National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning for Cedar City, Beaver and Milford.

“Dangerously cold wind chills expected,” the NWS warning says. “Wind chills 10 to 20 degrees below zero … Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch.”

Washington, Iron and Beaver counties are included in the alert, which runs from 7 p.m. Monday through 10 a.m. Tuesday. The forecast for Cedar City calls for mostly cloudy skies Monday evening giving way to clearing with a low temperature of 4 and wind chills of minus-4. North winds 6-9 mph. Tuesday’s high will be near 26 with wind chills as low as minus-6, according to the weather service.

St. George is looking at mostly cloudy skies Monday night with a low around 23, accompanied by east-northeast winds of 7-10 mph. The sun will break through on Tuesday, with highs near 41 and an overnight low of 25.

The NWS issued the following reminders:

  • The cold and wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
  • Avoid outside activities if possible. When outside, wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.
  • Slow down and use caution while traveling.

The Utah Department of Transportation  posted this weather travel alert at 12:45 p.m. Monday:

Ongoing snow showers across Southern and Central Utah continue into this evening and overnight. Snow will generally taper off over SW Utah this evening with the main impacts along I-15 from Cove Fort to Black Ridge Canyon. Snow showers fill in over SE Utah later this evening and overnight. Areas that typically don’t see road snow will have the opportunity through the early morning hours Tuesday.

Motorists are advised to use caution and TravelWise. Those traversing canyon and mountain routes should be aware Traction Laws may be enforced.
