ST. GEORGE — Two people were taken to the hospital in serious condition Wednesday night after being hit by a car while crossing Main Street near The Pizza Factory. It also left them facing charges related to unlawfully crossing the road.

The incident occurred around 9:25 p.m. in the area of 142 N. Main St. in front of Zion Brewery, which sits opposite The Pizza Factory across the street.

The two individuals, a 44-year-old woman and 39-year-old man, reportedly were crossing the street from the middle of the block and not at the nearby intersections of St. George Boulevard or Diagonal Street-200 North, St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell told St. George News in an email Thursday morning.

While crossing the street, the two were hit by a 2007 Honda Accord driven northbound by a 57-year-old man.

“Reports were he was going 25 (mph) and someone said 40 (mph), so I’m not sure on speed when he hit them,” Mitchell said in the email.

A man who was speaking loudly with police at the scene said he was a friend of the two people hit by the car. The man claimed he saw the Honda make a fast turn from the corner of St. George Boulevard and speed up the road before hitting his friends.

The man also said the part of the street where they were crossing wasn’t lit up enough and pointed out particular lampposts on either side of the street that hadn’t switched on as others had.

The collision left the man and woman crossing the street in serious condition. They required transport to St. George Regional Hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance with lights and sirens activated.

As to the extent of their injuries, Mitchell was unable to elaborate.

No charges have been filed against the Honda driver as of Thursday morning, Mitchell said, yet she noted the man and woman crossing the street had been changed.

The woman was charged by police with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, as well as unlawfully crossing the street. The man was charged with unlawful street crossing.

Under Utah law, pedestrians have the right-of-way when crossing “within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.” However, when crossing at any other point, the pedestrian must yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic.

Several police vehicles, two Gold Cross Ambulances, two paramedic units and a St. George Fire engine and fire crew responded to the scene.

This report is based on statements from court records, police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
