‘Hunting for spoons’: Washington City teen causes quite a stir with her custom spoon ring jewelry

WASHINGTON CITY — One teen is taking a jewelry popularity wave from the 1960s and dishing it back with a modern twist.

“People at the market come up to me, like older ladies, and they’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, I have one from when I was 18 years old,’” Jessica Green, 19, owner of Silverspoon Rings, said. “ I like that they’re coming back. We’re seeing everything coming back.”

Green said her business started four years ago when she was a junior in high school. While browsing online one day, she came across spoon rings.

Finding the cost of the rings outrageous, she decided she would find a way to make them herself.

After investing in a spoon bender — a device that forms the rings around a mandrel without heat — she started making jewelry for friends and family. She expanded her business by selling the rings on Instagram, then went on to create her own website.

After she started a TikTok account as a form of marketing and exposure, Green said one of her videos went viral, catapulting her business. With over 300,000 likes on the post, she had more than 300 spoon ring orders in just one night.

“It was so crazy,” Green said about the orders. “I was up until like 12 a.m. trying to pack orders. I had people helping me and I was paying them like employees.”

Last summer, she began selling Silverspoon Rings at the downtown farmers market, which she said has been highly successful. Many people said they have loved seeing the nostalgic rings make a comeback.

But where does she create the rings and where do the spoons come from?

Green said the entire jewelry line is made in her home bedroom, a setup she built with her father. She finds both silver and gold spoons at thrift stores and antique shops such as Deseret Industries, and online from places like eBay and Amazon. She also finds rings when she travels, such as on a trip to Missouri where she came back with over 300 spoons.

“It’s just kind of fun to go hunting for spoons,” she said.

Green said in the future she would love to offer spoon ring workshops and has an idea to renovate a portable construction trailer into a ring shop that she’d bring to local markets. She also hopes to offer gemstone sterling silver spoon rings.

Silverspoon Rings can be found inside the downtown Modern Farm and Artisan Co-op, The Smooth Shop on River Road and the Legends Salon and boutique on Sunset Boulevard. Visit their booth at the St. George Downtown Farmers Market, which will resume on Feb. 4. Shop Silverspoon Rings online via their website or Instagram.

“For me, starting my own business has been very beneficial,” Green said. “Being able to do my own business and work on my own schedule — I think that’s the best reason to have your own small business.”
