Police say 2 red-light runners cause collision on St. George Boulevard

ST. GEORGE — A crash between two vehicles at the corner of St. George Boulevard and 700 East that hindered traffic on both streets Tuesday afternoon resulted in two citations for each driver who ran red lights, police said.

St. George Police said the crash involved a dark gray Dodge Caravan with two women aboard and a black Mercedes, driven by a male as the sole passenger.

The crash, which occurred around 1:30 p.m., left the front of the Mercedes smashed and sitting in the right eastbound lane of the boulevard in the middle of the intersection. The minivan rolled up on the curb of the corner to the right of the traffic light pole next to the parking lot of Morty’s. No pedestrians were hurt.

At the time of the crash, the Mercedes was westbound on St. George Boulevard and the Caravan was headed east. Police said the Mercedes collided with the Caravan as it was trying to make a turn left on 700 East.

“Both drivers were cited for failure to obey the traffic signal,” St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell said. “Both ran a red light.”

Traffic on eastbound St. George Boulevard was backed up and blocked for a time, while northbound 700 East was down to one lane.

A Gold Cross Ambulance crew came to help one of the passengers of the minivan with minor injuries that were treated at the scene. Both front airbags were deployed on the minivan while the side airbags could be seen deployed on the Mercedes.

A St. George Fire Department crew, who had just finished up a previous crash near Greater Zion Stadium, arrived to clean up the second crash, which was cleared by 2:10 p.m.
