Region 10 boys basketball: Pine View, Dixie, Snow Canyon all win in night of blowouts

ST. GEORGE — Three Region 10 boys basketball teams won big Friday night.

Pine View got a shot in the arm and scored 72 points in a home win while Dixie continued its winning ways on the road by rolling to victory at Cedar City.

Snow Canyon also won convincingly at home. Following are recaps of the three games.

Pine View 72, Hurricane 47

It was hard to say which team needed the win more, but it was clear the Panthers wanted it more and Pine View picked up its first win in region play.

The Panthers made a statement early, taking a 21-10 lead after one quarter and a 38-24 advantage at halftime. The first half was a foul-filled affair as both teams were in the bonus early in the second frame.

Cayleb Jackman and Nifai Iloa started Hurricane on the right foot, scoring back-to-back buckets to open the third quarter. But after that Pine View’s Griffen Shepherd took over.

The junior scored six points in the third quarter and then 10 points in the fourth, part of his 27-point effort in the victory. Most of his points came from the paint as he drove into the heart of Hurricane’s defense and attacked the rim.

Kanyon Dickinson sank three 3-pointers and finished with 12 points in the victory, and Nash Schroeder contributed nine points to Pine View’s cause.

Meanwhile, Owen Iloa led Hurricane with nine points, and Jackman scored seven points in the setback.

Hurricane hosts Cedar and Pine View plays at Desert Hills —  both games at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

Dixie 85, Cedar 66

 At Cedar High, the Dixie Flyers opened up an early 26-13 lead over the Reds late in the first quarter and stayed ahead the rest of the way.

Dixie center Kyle Lemke scored 11 of his game-high 28 points during the opening quarter, mostly from posting up for inside shots.

Cedar fought back to close the deficit to five points at halftime, with Cedar’s Landen Krietzer hitting a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the second quarter to make it 42-37 Dixie.

Early in the third, Cedar narrowed the gap to three points on two successive possessions, but the Flyers went on an 8-0 lead to take a 54-43 lead with 3:50 left in the third.

Cedar subsequently cut Dixie’s lead to five points again, but back-to-back three-point plays by Lemke and Jordan Roberts helped the Flyers take a 15-point lead at the end of the third, 64-49.

The Flyers stayed comfortably ahead throughout the fourth, finishing with an 85-66 victory.

Dixie’s top two scorers combined for a total of 47 points, with guard Jordan Roberts’ 19 points adding to Lemke’s 28. Roberts also added 10 assists and grabbed seven rebounds, while Lemke snared nine boards. Also for Dixie, Breckon Robinson chipped in 15 points and three assists, while John Southwick added 9 points and Grant Carter scored 8.

Cedar’s Stockton Albrecht led his team’s balanced scoring attack with 17 points, while Kreitzer added 15 and Kanden Coronado and Boston Garrett each scored 12 for the Reds.

“I expected them to give us a fight. They always do,” Dixie head coach Tyler Roberts said of Cedar after the game. “They’re well-coached and they had guys hit some big shots. We’ve been getting everybody’s best shot right now, which is great because it prepares us for later in the season.”

Roberts also noted that when Lemke is being double-teamed inside, “He’s got to be able to pass out of the post. I thought he did a great job of finding guys on cuts and kicking it out to them.”

Dixie, which improved 14-2 overall and 5-0 in Region 10 play, next hosts Crimson Cliffs on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. Cedar (6-8, 1-4) plays at Hurricane that same evening.

Snow Canyon 55, Desert Hills 39

Owen Mackay continued to scorch Region 10 nets and poured in 22 points, including two 3-pointers, and the defending 4A champions won another game.

Snow Canyon eked out a slim 13-11 lead after the first quarter and led 23-17 at halftime in a low-scoring affair.

Cy Meacham canned three 3-pointers in the Snow Canyon win, posting 13 total points. Snow Canyon had five players score points in the contest.

Desert Hills also spread out all of its scoring among five players, led by Lincoln Holmes and his 15 points.  Boston Holbrook scored eight while Eli Allred and Chomp Jones netted seven points apiece in the setback.

Desert Hills hosts Pine View at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25.  Snow Canyon, which has a bye next Wednesday, plays at Crimson Cliffs for a 7 p.m. game Friday, Jan. 27.
