At approximately 6:35 a.m., the Hurricane Valley Fire District responded to a report of a fire alarm at 985 N. Sky Mountain Blvd in Hurricane, according to a news release issued by the agency.

The first crews on the scene reported “steam and a strong chemical odor” emanating from a vent on a pool mechanical building and requested additional resources from the Southwest Regional Response team. Hurricane Vally Fire crews “immediately set up hazmat operations,” including hazard control zones and decontamination.

The St. George Fire Department arrived as part of the response team and began offensive operations with the Hurricane Valley Fire District, entering the building “with full hazmat protection” and discovering a chemical spill, according to the release.

The team sought to identify the chemical to begin the mitigation process and found the spill was a mix of hydrochloric acid and another unknown substance, the release states.

There were reportedly no injuries.
