ST. GEORGE — Aly Johnston is on a mission to help Switchpoint.
Johnston, a marketing major at Utah Tech University and the 2022-23 Miss Washington County, devotes much of her service time to helping families and children.
Originally from Pocatello, Idaho, Johnston came to St. George to attend school. Being Miss Washington County affords her multiple opportunities for volunteer work at the Children’s Museum, where she helps put on shows.
She is focusing her efforts on a food drive that she set up for Switchpoint, the homeless shelter and community resource center located at 948 North 1300 W in St. George.
The event takes place at the shelter Saturday, Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Johnston will be accepting canned goods and packaged foods. Basically all food products will be accepted that are well-sealed, she said.
“Every little thing helps,” Johnston told St. George News. “Even if you only have one item to bring, I would encourage everyone to come visit and say hi so I can get to meet you.”
Utah Food Bank is co-sponsoring the event. Johnston first became involved with Switchpoint through its Circles Program.
“It’s a program for families to help them learn the ropes to help them get out of poverty,” Johnston said. “It’s been so awesome and rewarding to watch them over time. They end up having a job and getting out of poverty.
“Since then I’ve always had a love for Switchpoint,” she added. “I’ve met so many amazing people, I think of them as my second family. I really want to give back.”
