Region 10 girls basketball: Flyers, Thunder, Warriors remain unbeaten in early region action

ST. GEORGE — Teams are starting to make statements in Region 10 girls basketball action.

Three teams remain unbeaten in region play after Tuesday night’s games.

Dixie held on to a big lead throughout its win at home, Snow Canyon was in cruise control on the road and defending 4A champion Desert Hills had to dig deep to gut out an overtime win at home.

Following are recaps of Tuesday night’s contests, along with those from last Thursday, Jan. 5:

Dixie 52, Pine View 44

The Flyers improved to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in Region 10 after never trailing in the Hangar against the Panthers.

Junior post player Kealah Faumuina led the Flyers with 18 points, 16 of them in the first half. She was saddled with early foul trouble and ended up fouling out of the contest with 5:39 remaining.

Faumuina told St. George News after the game that she thought a couple of the calls against her in the second half were “bogus.”

“I did not deserve those,” she said. “I wanted to play more. But my teammates were really resilient. I’m really proud of them for just being able to go through and get it done, and we’re only going to get better and better.”

Faumuina made three buckets inside and Dixie led 14-13 after the first quarter. She followed that with 16 points in the second session and Dixie led 33-22 at halftime.

Pine View fought back in the low-scoring second half. The Panthers worked for open shots but had a hard time getting them to fall and the end of the game was foul-filled and slow.

Hali Smith scored 11 points for the winning cause and Jaide Bundy chipped in 10 points for the Flyers.

Dixie has a lot of momentum heading into Thursday night’s huge rivalry game, 7 p.m. at Snow Canyon.

“I really believed in us. I knew we could do it,” Faumuina said about their hot start. “So it’s more of, we worked for it and we deserve to get it.”

Desert Hills 59, Crimson Cliffs 53 (OT)

The Thunder (7-6, 3-0) controlled the overtime session after the scrappy effort by the Mustangs (1-7, 0-3) fell just short.

The backyard rivals played a tight game throughout, battling to a 13-13 tie after the first quarter.

The Thunder dominated the second frame 12-4, but the Mustangs rallied at halftime and won the third quarter 15-8.

The teams were tied 51-51 after regulation. Jacie Riding canned a huge 3-pointer for Desert Hills to propel the overtime surge.

All five starters for Desert Hills played the entire game. Riding’s 19 points keyed the Thunder while Ashtin Hansen scored 17 and Hannah Heaton netted 11 in the victory.

Kaitlyn Andrus (nine points) and Brynlee Mortensen sank a huge 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to round out the Thunder scoring.

Kinsie Plewe sank Crimson’s only 3-pointer in the contest and finished with 11 points for the Mustangs. Samiyah Jones and Summer Adams threw in nine points apiece in the setback.

Crimson Cliffs next plays at Hurricane Thursday night at 7 p.m., while Desert Hills next plays on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at home against Dixie.

Snow Canyon 63, Cedar 43

The visiting Warriors jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a 20-point win at Cedar.

Snow Canyon sophomore Olivia Hamlin, who led all scorers with 24 points, set the pace by making 8 in each of the first three periods.

Natalie Olsen added 12 points in the first quarter for the Warriors and finished with 16.

The Warriors led 22-13 at the end of the first quarter, but Cedar’s Kasia Davis scored a pair of baskets in succession at the start of the second to cut Snow Canyon’s lead to five points, 22-17.

The Warriors then finished the quarter with an 18-5 run to take a 40-22 halftime lead. Snow Canyon outscored Cedar 10-7 during the third and maintained a healthy double digit lead the rest of the way.

Cedar was led by guard Gabby Gomez’s 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Annalyse Shimada added 10 points for the Reds.

Snow Canyon coach Dan Roden said the Warriors’ defense was focused on slowing down Shimada.

“I thought we made life tough on Shimada,” Roden told St. George News. “She’s a stud, but she had to work for everything. It was a good win for us in the toughest place to play in the region.”

Roden also praised his team’s offensive effort.

“We didn’t shoot well from 3, but our transition game was great,” he said. “I was really happy with the way we ran the floor and looked to advance to teammates on the break.”
