WASHINGTON CITY — After a commercial dump truck driver left the loading bed up, it caught a power line and caused a minor power outage in Washington City Thursday afternoon.

The collision resulted in a downed power line and power pole.

“It is pretty straightforward,” Washington Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Kory Klotz said. “A Volvo dump truck dropped off a load of dirt, and the driver thought his truck bed was retracted and drove off, taking out a power line that goes into a residence.”

Klotz said the incident occurred at about 3:15 p.m. near 140 W and 100 N. He said it definitely affected the power for the one residence the power line goes to but potentially affected other residences.

Washington City’s Public Affairs Officer Jordan Hess reported that three residences were impacted by the incident, but potentially more could be during repairs.

“The outage is very isolated,” Hess said.

Klotz said there were no injuries and some damage to commercial property and the vehicle involved.

Washington City Power Company was at the scene making repairs to restore power. Hess said they estimate it would be 4-5 hours before the power would be restored.

Klotz advised drivers to double-check equipment and the height of their vehicles and loads before driving.

This report is based on statements from police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
