Washington City business donates $25K in medical supply bags to schools for student safety

ST. GEORGE — In the spirit of the holidays, StatPacks has been donating medical supply bags to every school in the Washington County School District – 63 so far and valued at $25,000. The bags are being used by school resource officers, medical staff and athletic trainers for student safety in moments of crisis.

St. George News was at Crimson Cliffs High School, less than 5 miles from StatPacks headquarters, for the donation of eight of the bags. Principal Rusty Taylor said this is the second donation from the company so now more of the Mustangs sports teams will have one.

“The organization aspect of these bags is huge,” Taylor said. “Our athletic trainer can set up one for the cross county team, one for the football team and so on because each bag can be drastically different in terms of what is needed for each sport, and there are so many teams.”

Ashley Wollam, an athletic trainer at Crimson Cliffs High, said the first bag they received from StatPacks has been used primarily for football and she was impressed by the features.

“These bags are waterproof and weather resistant, and they are compartmentalized to make whatever we are carrying really easy to find,” she said. “So when the opportunity came up and I was asked if we could use more, I was all in.”

Inception of StatPacks

When Washington City business owner Scott Nelson was a paramedic in the 1990s, he also was an avid outdoor enthusiast. While hauling bags of medical equipment to various sites, he said he wished they were more comfortable to carry like his backpacking equipment, which led to the idea for StatPacks, a company that produces medical supply carrying kits and backpacks for first responders, police, fire and medical personnel.

“Basically it is taking a fusion of all the technology that we have learned about the outdoor industry and trying to incorporate it into the medical industry,” he said.

Charli Nelson, Scott’s wife and public relations manager at StatPacks, said the company has now donated at least one bag to every school within the Washington County School District but would like to expand their donations to schools in need.

“This holiday season we wanted to give back to the community, but we realize there are more schools in the state of Utah that could use these,” she said. “If you have any information or donation needs, please visit statpacks.com. Our mission is helping those that are helping others.”

StatPacks also produces various equipment, such as vests and jackets, not only for medical workers but also construction, security, transportation or any industry where visibility can be a lifesaver. Their medical bags also make great first aid kits for treacherous occupations such as forestry logging or underground mining, Nelson said.
