Colorado City Marshal’s Office Chief Robb Radley said the young man was with family walking around the reservoir with family dogs when a couple of the pets ran across the ice and one fell through the ice into the water.

The man reportedly used a small sled and tried to work his way out on the ice to rescue the dog when the ice broke and he fell in. First responders were called at about 5:12 p.m. and when they arrived on the scene, family members had been searching. The search with first responders continued but with no results.

The Washington County Search and Rescue diving team was called in and found the body of 26-year-old Jeremiah Barlow.

The dog did not survive.

Once the investigation was completed, and the scene was cleared after 10 p.m.

“We add our condolences to the family and communities of Short Creek,” Radley said. “We are sorry that the family suffered this loss and at this time of the year.”
