Police: Left turn on St. George Boulevard triggers 4-vehicle collision

ST. GEORGE — A four-vehicle crash partially blocked access to one of the city’s busiest intersections Monday night following one driver’s failure to yield to oncoming traffic.

Just before 6 p.m., the St. George Police Department and other responders were alerted to the crash at St. George Boulevard and 1000 East. What they found were two passenger cars and an SUV that had sustained heavy damage where they had been hit and a Dodge Ram truck that appeared to have fared far better than the others involved.

The apparent cause of the crash was a 16-year-old driver’s attempt to turn left from St. George Boulevard onto 1000 East, St. George Police officer Tiffany Mitchell told St. George News Tuesday.

The 16-year-old driver was behind the wheel of a black 2014 Honda Accord when she made the turn and collided with a gray 2009 Honda Accord driven by a 22-year-old woman who was eastbound.

The collision caused the black Honda to collide with red 2015 Kia Sportage SUV driven by a 64-year-old woman while the gray Honda hit a white 2012 Dodge Ram driven by a 60-year-old man, Mitchell said.

The gray Honda Accord and red Kia SUV came to rest in the southern section of the intersection and blocked the northbound lanes on that end. The black Honda ended up going off the road several feet and stopped southeast of the intersection. The Dodge Ram pulled over to the side of the road on 1000 East.

Despite the number of vehicles involved and the high volume of traffic at the intersection, no major injuries were reported and no one required transportation to the hospital via ambulance, Mitchell said.

The 16-year-old driver was cited by police for failing to yield to oncoming traffic.

The black and gray Honda Accords and red Kia SUV were towed from the scene while the Dodge Ram remained operable and was driven away.

Traffic passing through the intersection was disrupted at various points as police officers temporarily blocked different lanes in order to allow space for tow trucks to remove the vehicles involved.

The intersection was free of the inoperable vehicles and related debris by 7:30 p.m.

The St. George Boulevard-1000 intersection is one of the busiest in St. George due to it serving as one of the city’s primary entry and exit points via Interstate 15.
