ST. GEORGE — Since entering the ranks of Division I football, Utah Tech has not shied away from scheduling tough opponents, and 2023’s slate might be the most challenging yet.

In a press release, Utah Tech announced Tuesday that Coach Paul Peterson’s team will travel out of St. George for seven games and will host four contests at Greater Zion Stadium.

The Trailblazers will compete in a newly combined football-only merger between the Atlantic Sun and Western athletic conferences.

The ASUN-WAC football partnership began with a combined group that built the ASUN-WAC Challenge in 2021.

Featuring an automatic qualifier (AQ) into the FCS playoff each of the past two years, the football group enters year three with nine participating institutions: Abilene Christian, Austin Peay, Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky, North Alabama, Southern Utah, Stephen F. Austin, Tarleton and Utah Tech.

The group will add current WAC member UTRGV (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) in the fall of 2025 when that school begins sponsorship of football.

“We are excited to see another fantastic schedule for our Trailblazer football team and a chance for a conference championship,” Peterson said. “We continue to schedule the best FCS opponents, along with a challenging ASUN-WAC slate. The future is bright and we can’t wait for September 2023.”

The four home games in the announced schedule are against Montana (Sept. 9), Stephen F. Austin (Oct. 7), Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 28) and Southern Utah (Nov. 18). That last will be a renewal of the “Battle for the Ax” in-state rivalry game.

Also of note on the away-game schedule is a Sept. 30 meeting with Colorado State, an FBS school in the Mountain West Conference.
