4A boys basketball: Coach Walker Classic concludes, 4 Region 10 teams win

ST. GEORGE — Desert Hills, Crimson Cliffs, Dixie and Cedar all won games as the 2022 Coach Walker Classic concluded Saturday.

The three-day basketball extravaganza featured 13 varsity teams from around Utah plus maybe double that amount of junior varsity, sophomore and freshmen squads.

The Thunder, Mustangs and Flyers all swept their classic runs, winning three, three and four games, respectively.

Following are recaps of Region 10 games in the class Saturday, plus glances at all seven squads as they enter the holidays and prepare for region play after the calendar turns into next year.

In an early game at Pine View High School, the sharp shooting Thunder rained 3’s upon the Templars and won its third game in a row.

Desert Hills (5-3) sank six 3-pointers in the second quarter and six more 3-balls in the third to propel the Thunder to victory.

“We’re starting to shoot it more like we feel we’re capable of,” Thunder coach Chris Allred told St. George News. Desert Hills canned 13 3-pointers overall in the victory.

“The first part of the season we were having a hard time finding a rhythm offensively and getting the shots that we want,” Allred said. “But we’ve put together back-to-back games where we shot the ball well.”

Boston Holbrook netted the Thunder’s first trey in the first quarter, but the Templars started hot and led 15-11 after one session.

Then Desert Hills took command in the second quarter, doubling up the Templars 24-12 after its first barrage of 3-pointers.

Lincoln Holmes and Chomp Jones both sank two treys in the quarter. Holbrook had another and Ty Attig hit from deep as well.

The Thunder kept rolling in the third quarter, scoring another 24 points and splashing six more 3-pointers.

Holmes and Jones matched each other again with a pair of treys. Holbrook and Jackson Holman threw in the other two 3’s and Desert Hills led for good 59-40 entering the fourth quarter.

“Excluding the last little stretch of that, did a pretty good job executing and just sharing the ball, and making one extra pass,” Allred said. “Proud of the way we played the last couple nights, good effort.”

Holmes scored a game-high 18 for the Thunder while Holbrook chipped in 13 points to the cause. Jones finished with 12 points off of his four 3-balls.

Austin Thomas paced the Templars with 16 points and Larson Pogroszewski scored 12 for Manti.

Desert Hills is at South Sevier Dec. 29 and plays Parowan Dec. 30 before opening Region 10 play after the New Year.

“I love this team. They work hard. They’re determined to play the way that we’re asking them to play and we’re slowly getting better,” Allred said. “We have some things to figure out defensively a little bit, but we’re getting better there.”

Crimson Cliffs 80, Maple Mountain 50

The Mustangs (6-3) capped a perfect 3-0 at the classic and won its fourth game in a row, trampling the Golden Eagles by 30.

Crimson broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Maple Mountain 27-13 in the frame and then holding the visitors to just eight points in the final session.

The Mustangs get a long holiday break and will next play in its first Region 10 game, Jan. 4 at Snow Canyon.

Dixie 72, Green Canyon 55

The Flyers (9-1) continued to scorch the scoreboard, winning all four of its classic games.

Dixie never trailed the contest with the Wolves, taking a 30-25 lead into halftime and then controlling the game in the second half.

Leading scorer Kyle Lemke was almost perfect shooting the ball, stroking 11-of-12 field goal attempts into the cylinder and tallying 25 points.

Breckon Robinson contributed 21 points to Dixie’s cause and John Southwick scored 14.

Dixie will take a holiday break and then hopes to stay hot in two tough road games. The Flyers are at Real Salt Lake Academy Dec. 30 in Herriman.

Then Dixie goes to Layton Dec. 31 to face the Eagles of Layton Christian Academy. That game is listed as a Region 10 contest.

Cedar 80, Spanish Fork 75, OT

The Reds (4-4) snapped a three-game losing streak by overcoming a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime, then winning the extra session 13-8 for the clutch victory at home.

Five different Reds posted double-digit scoring in a balanced attack, led by Stockton Albrecht and his 21 points. Ty Bronson sank three 3-pointers and totaled 16 points.

Landon Kreitzer (15 points), Nathan Rogers (11 points) and Boston Garrett (10 points) rounded out Cedar’s high scorers.

Cedar plays crosstown rival Canyon View Dec. 20, then opens Region 10 play Jan. 4 at Desert Hills.

Logan 72, Pine View 60

The Panthers (1-7) saw a four-point lead disintegrate in the fourth quarter as the Grizzlies overwhelmed Pine View 21-5 in the frame for the victory.

Griffen Shepherd led Pine View with his 23 points. Kanyon Dickinson sank four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points and Nash Schroeder contributed nine points to the cause.

Logan’s Justin Anderson was a thorn in the Panthers’ side all game, leading all scorers with 26 points including five 3-pointers.

Pine View has some time off for the holidays and next plays in its first Region 10 game, Jan. 6 at home against Snow Canyon.

Snow Canyon

After going 1-1 at the classic and moving to 6-2 overall, the defending 4A state champion Warriors have one game on its schedule before Region 10 play begins after the New Year.

Snow Canyon has a neutral game scheduled against Federal Way (Washington) Dec. 20. Then the Warriors open play in the region Jan. 4 at home against Crimson Cliffs.

Hurricane hits the road for three games starting Dec. 28, when it plays Panguitch.

The Tigers open Region 10 play with a game at Dixie Jan. 4.
