According to a press release from UHSAA, Dixon won the 2022 Distinguished Service Award for Media and will be recognized in a ceremony at Siempre, near South Mountain Golf Course in Draper, Utah, on Jan. 11.

“Total surprise,” Dixon told St. George News when he found out about the honor. “Thanks to UHSAA and thanks so much to whoever nominated me and selected me for the award.”

He went on to say what a privilege it has been to cover local sports and get to know athletic directors, coaches and players in southern Utah and across the state.

“It’s an honor. I’ve been doing this over 20 years and this is the coolest award I’ve ever been a part of,” Dixon said. “I love covering local sports, that’s my passion, so to be nominated by somebody in our market and recognized by people who share my passion is just awesome.”

Dixon currently hosts The Drive, a daily sports talk show on The Fan Sports Network from 7-9 a.m. He has been a part of the local sports community in and around St. George for the last 20 years.

According to the press release from UHSAA, the award honors outstanding contributors to Utah high school activities and brings together Utah’s finest educators, officials and contributors at the high school level.

The list of 2022 Distinguished Service Award winners includes 16 other honorees besides Dixon.

In the southwest region, longtime Dixie football coach Blaine Monkres was named 4A Coach of the Year and Canyon View baseball coach Jason Jacobsen earned 3A Coach of the Year honors.

“I’ve known Blaine a long time,” Dixon said. “What a thrill to be in the same class with such a great coach and great group of coaches, officials and administrators.”

Jim Rome highlights new programming

The Fan Sports Network, broadcasting at 99.5 FM in St. George and live-streaming here, initiated a programming change and now features national coverage from CBS Sports Radio.

Dixon said he remains committed to local coverage at both the high school and collegiate levels.

The Drive will continue to spearhead Dixon’s local coverage, and Kaden Foremaster and Mark Musgrave will continue to host their daily afternoon sports talk show, From the Bleachers, from 4-6 p.m.

“With my show and From the Bleachers, we’re the only sports station in town with two local shows,” Dixon said. “For sure we’re going to stay committed to local sports coverage. That is what we’re excited to do and that is what we provide that you can’t get anywhere else.”

Supplementing the local content, Dixon said, will be coverage from CBS Sports Radio, highlighted by legendary sports jockey Jim Rome.

“I think it’s been at least more than 15 years since Jim Rome has been in our market on the airwaves,” Dixon said. “He’s always had a loyal following around here and I’m pumped to have him back. He’s one of the biggest names in sports radio.

“Some of our listeners might not be as familiar with CBS, but I think they’ll really enjoy the national content,” he added.

Dixon said live broadcasts of Region 10 boys and girls basketball games are already happening and coverage of Utah Tech athletics continues on The Fan Sports Network.
