The Utah Highway Patrol and other responders were alerted to a possible hit-and-run incident on southbound Interstate 15 by the Green Springs/Exit 10 interchange around 5:15 p.m.

UHP Trooper Grant Hintze said a 1999 Nissan Altima was southbound on I-15 in the far-right lane running up to the Green Springs exit. As the Nissan neared the exit, the Nissan’s driver and witnesses told responding troopers that a vehicle in the middle lane of the freeway sped up to get ahead of the Nissan and clipped the front of the car while moving into the far-fight lane.

The contact sent the Nissan into a spin across the travel lanes until the front of it collided with the concrete barrier separating the south and northbound lanes of I-15. The Nissan then spun back across the roadway until coming to a rest on Exit 10’s southbound off-ramp.

The Nissan blocked part of the off-ramp for an estimated 10-15 minutes before personnel from the Utah Department of Transportation arrived at the scene and helped move the car out lane and onto the shoulder.

While the front of the Nissan was demolished, Hintze said the driver, a 23-year-old woman, and two passengers, a 31-year-old woman and 8-year-old girl, had been spared major injury due to wearing their seat belts and airbags deploying. Minor injuries were reported and no one required transportation to the hospital by ambulance.

Parts of the incident are still being pieced together due to a slight language barrier that required the presence of a Spanish-speaking trooper, Hintze said.
