ST. GEORGE —A chain-reaction collision on 100 South in St. George not far from the intersection of Bluff Street Wednesday morning blocked the eastbound side for nearly an hour and, witnesses said, nearly resulted in a woman being hit by a sports utility vehicle.
No one was injured but a baby inside one of the vehicles was taken by Gold Cross Ambulance to St. George Regional Hospital as a precautionary measure.
The incident occurred around 10:40 a.m., on 100 South about a block and a half from the intersection with Bluff Street. St. George Police Officer David Blackman said a white SUV with a female driver as the sole passenger was traveling east on 100 South. A silver Kia Optima with a female driver and a baby in a car seat in the back pulled away from the curb to make a U-turn.
The driver of the Kia “didn’t see her and just kind of collided,” Blackman said. “And then the SUV ended up hitting the parked van up there.”
The driver of the SUV, who didn’t want to be identified, said her car was pushed into the back of a van owned by a home cleaning service that was parked on the eastbound curb of 100 South. At the time, the cleaning service worker was about to load her equipment into the back of the van. The SUV driver and another witness said the woman was nearly hit but got out of the way.
The Kia, with its front fender lying in the road, was left blocking the eastbound side of 100 South. While there was no traffic backup, vehicles were still forced to move into the westbound lane to get past the incident.
The SUV was left smashed into the back of the van.
Both the Kia and the SUV were towed and the incident was cleared by 11:33 a.m.
“I believe one of the drivers will receive a citation for an improper U-turn,” said Blackman, noting the investigation is ongoing. “I’m not sure yet.”
