Powerball madness: Residents of Utah flood Arizona stores for their chance to win $1.9 billion

ST. GEORGE —After the Saturday Powerball drawing yielded no winner, the jackpot has grown to a record $1.9 billion for Monday’s drawing, resulting in both Utah and Nevada residents flocking to their nearest Arizona stores on Sunday in hopes of winning big.

St. George News reporter Chris Reed was on scene at Eagles Landing in Littlefield, Arizona Sunday morning, where he witnessed the lottery-buying frenzy for himself. As he glanced around the full gas station parking lot, he noticed a mixture of Utah and Nevada license plates.

While the signs above the Arizona Lottery machine in Littlefield showed the jackpot at $999 million – the highest the machines are able to show – players now have the chance to win an estimated $1.9 billion dollars with a cash value of $929.1 Million – the world’s largest lottery prize ever.

According to the New York Times, having no winners Saturday ties the game record for the number of consecutive drawings without a grand prize winner. Saturday’s drawing at the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee was Powerball’s 40th since the jackpot was last won on Aug. 3 by a ticket in Pennsylvania.

Lottery players choose six numbers from two separate pools of numbers – five different numbers from 1 to 69, and one number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball. “Quick Pick” tickets are also available, which automatically select random numbers. Each player’s ticket costs $2.

According to Lotto America, Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, including Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, while Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah do not participate.

Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET. Tomorrow’s drawing for a chance to win the $1.9 billion will be broadcast on the Powerball website and on television stations across the country.
