ST. GEORGE —A vehicle fire inside a garage on Saturday afternoon called for a quick response from first responders, and that’s exactly what they did.

According to a Facebook post by Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue, the department was dispatched at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Saturday to a working structure fire on Carter’s Pond Road in Dammeron Valley.

Firefighters arrived within three minutes to find a vehicle fire inside the home’s garage. Crews stretched an attack line to stop the forward progression of the fire. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes and responders removed the vehicle from the garage to prevent the fire from spreading to the home.

Fire Captain Ryan D’Ambrosio with Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue said the vehicle had no make or markings, but the owner told investigators it was a 1956 Plymouth.

The fire ignited when the property owner was attempting to start the vehicle inside the garage.

“The fire was started with a malfunction that had to do with the fuel system, so it was a mechanical failure in the engine compartment that led to the fire,” D’Ambrosio said.

On scene, Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue was joined by Santa Clara-Ivins Fire & Rescue, Gunlock Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance.

“Crews did an awesome job,” D’Ambrosio said. “They extinguished the fire in an extremely short fashion. A quick response saved the house, in my professional opinion.”

Two hours after the home was evacuated, responders released the residence to the owners, who were able to return inside without incident.

Earlier this year, the Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue began staffing with part-time responders, which now provides 24-hours of firefighter and EMT coverage, similar to St. George and Washington City. Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue operates with one fire station consisting of  one fire engine, three brush trucks and a rescue vehicle.

This report is based on statements from first responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
